Peter Sellers was a comic genius, and nowhere is this more evident than in A Shot in the Dark, the first of the Pink Panther series to exclusively feature Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. It’s one case where the sequel is superior to the original! This film can only be described as gaspingly funny. I’ve seen this move several dozen times, but it still makes me howl with laughter every time I see it. It’s amazing to think that Sellers also made The Pink Panther, Dr. Stangelove, and The World of Henry Orient the same year (all titles I would highly recommend as well). The fact that “Shot” is now on DVD in widescreen makes it that much more special. The supporting cast (Elke Sommer, Herbert Lom, George Sanders, and Bert Kwouk, among others) is perfect and provides a perfect ensemble foil to Sellers. The “Camp Sunshine” scene alone makes “Shot” worth seeing. This film is so funny, I can recommend that you purchase it without having seen it first — it’s that good!

This is one of the very rare films where the sequel is better than the original. This movie is absolutely a letter perfect comedy: suave yet silly; understated yet over the top; pompous yet reserved. You get the idea. A perfect film. I wouldn’t change one thing about this movie, even if I could. Peter Sellers defines the bumbling Clouseau as an individual better here than in the original, and I think the supporting cast is stronger as well. Elke Sommer is perfect as the beautiful, naive murder suspect who Clouseau goes to any ends to defend, while George Sanders is wonderful as the great scoundrel millionaire, Benjamin Ballon. Introduced for the first time in the series are Bert Kwouk as Kato (later spelled ‘Cato’), Graham Stark as Clouseau’s (extremely) patient assistant, Hercule, and my favorite of all the Panther supporting characters, the great Herbert Lom as Inspector Dreyfus. Watching Lom go through the phases of psychosis in this film is one of the greatest experiences and delights a person can have as a movie viewer. (I particularly like his performance in the closing scene, and when reading the newspaper with trembling hands and twitching eye.)

The plot concerns Clouseau’s infatuation with a wrongly accused murder suspect, and the chaos that develops from that unlikely situation. The film is filled with a degree of nuance seldom seen in a comedy, and is probably the best crafted of all the Panther films (although I have to admit that the way over the top “Pink Panther Strikes Again” is my personal favorite.) The physical comedy that Sellers could make totally natural (watch the “spinning globe” scene for an excellent example) is still unrivalled, and the nuanced interplay with other cast members is better than in any other comedy that I can think of (to see what I mean watch the “curved pool cue” scene and the interaction of both Monsieur Ballon and the butler.)

I highly recommend this film. The DVD print is good, though there are few extras (the original trailer is very amusing and a tad on the weird side.) It is slapstick, but it is very refined slapstick done by the master, Peter Sellers. If only they still made movies like this today. I give it five stars only because Amazon won’t allow more!
las vegas car insurance quotes
orlando auto insurance rates

What a great idea: record the cast album for Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” live, as it were–no overdubs, no artificial mixdown. What a great idea: get a documentary crew to record the record session. The filmmaker caught 15-and-a-half hours of bleary-eyed cast members giving their all for a tough record producer and an even tougher composer/lyricist. (It had to be one marathon session because it would be too expensive to assemble all those singers and musicians for multiple sessions.) This is a great documentary that shows how hard it all is. If you’ve only seen her on the incipid show “Alice,” you’ll have no idea how talented Beth Howland is till you see her in “Getting Married Today.” Donna McKechnie, Susan Browning, and Pamela Myers spoof Rogers and Hart (and not the Andrew Sisters as everyone seems to think) with verve in “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” which also finds Sondheim at his most clever. Charles Kimbrough would go on to do Murphy Brown and Barbara Barrie would briefly be in Barney Miller, and both shine here as effortless, “natural” actors. Star Dean Jones is perfect as the slightly dopey Bobby, even if some of his singing will make you wince. What’s perhaps most remarkable is that the numbers that sound so fresh and improvisational actually took 8, 10, 15 takes. Especially “The Ladies Who Lunch.” Elaine Stritch’s famous song was the last number they recorded. By the time they were ready, it was after four in the morning and everyone was exhausted. Stritch tries, but after about eight takes it’s clear she’s not going to make it that night. With everyone getting punchy, they decide to record her music track separately, bringing her back the next day to knock the song out of the park.

The DVD has a commentary track, as Stritch, Hal Prince and the filmmaker reminisce about the session 30 years later. There’s also a strange feature where one of the songs not covered in the doc can be listened to over B&W stills from the theatrical production. This didn’t do anything for me, but there’s no harm in having it there, either.

So this is a very good documentary. But it could have been even better. Two of the most complex and interesting songs, the opening number and “Side By Side/What Would We Do Without You,” are barely covered in the film. I really wanted to see how they pulled off these extraordinarily complex numbers with the complete cast “live,” but the documentary doesn’t show it. Too bad. A 90 minute documentary with this material would hae been so much better than a 60 minute documentary without. It’s probably true the 60 minute limit was imposed by ABC, which originally aired the documentary, but I’d be surprised if the filmmaker didn’t save material that could have been added back for this DVD.

Still, this is worth owning, if a little pricey for a 53 minute CD (not 58, as advertised on the case). In some ways this musical is a classic, and in others it’s incredibly (and amusingly) dated. Both qualities just make it all the more wonderful.

If you care about musical theatre, then you will want to see this 1-hour condesation of the 18 1/2 hour recording session that yielded the original cast album of COMPANY.

This documentary will give you an idea of how much sweat goes into making these albums… usually done in one long day in a cramped recording studio. Once you see this documentary, you’ll listen to the album in a totally different way. Watch Sondheim coach the singers: correct their pronunciations, or even correct notes they have changed over the weeks of performances. Best of all watch Elaine Stritch struggle to record “The Ladies Who Lunch” until exhaustion gets the better of her and she starts screaming back at her own playback. And yet … and yet the final result is worth it! No other cast album documentary captures as much as this one.

A must for those who know that cast albums are NOT “soundtracks!”
florida car insurance quotes
florida vehicle insurance

Bridget Fonda is outstanding in this role. Good mix of tense action and romance. I have recommended it to several friends and they all love it too. It’s even better the 2nd time you watch it. It doesn’t get stale.

I also “love Nina”.

Although lacking in some respects compared to the French original (you end up hoping that Bridget as assassin will pulverize her whimpering boyfriend with one of those big, big machine guns), Bridget Fonda as the star and Nina Simone with the soulful soundtrack give this movie the edge over La femme Nikita in at least two important departments. Bridget’s performance here amazes me every time I see it–simultaneously believable as a feverishly trained assassin and a tragic hero so cute you just want to reach out and pinch her cheeks. But the highest marks go to the soundtrack. The writers of the adaptation wove in Nina Simone as a motif throughout the movie, well-complemented by 5 Nina songs, including “Feeling Good” and a cover of “Here Comes the Sun” tracked to the “relationship” scenes that /ALMOST/ make you forget how much you’d like Bridget to terminate her relationship with extreme prejudice….. Provides soulful reflection absent from the French original, and worth watching more than a few times for that reason alone. Pretentious naysayers say this remake has gone through the Hollywood ringer, but it’s an A+ action-flick-plus-morality-tale spun before Quentin Tarantino made it socially acceptable for PBS-watchers to admit they like ‘em. Give it a chance.
los angeles auto insurance quotes

1/29/05 – Pleased Birthday Annette. I unprejudiced received the 1/25/05 widescreen release of the BTTF trilogy release on 1/27/05, from Amazon/Borders, and I am very jubilant. I have viewed all three movies and some of the special features. My plot up is a 50 scoot widescreen TV and a 6.1 sound system. The sound and vision was fine. I was reluctant to consume the trilogy, due to past unpleasant reviews of the widescreen version with errors on disc 2 and 3, with letterbox dismal bars on the top and bottom. I did not detect any share of scenes with less report information or dusky bars on any of the movies. The viewing cover was filled, in my notion, perfectly. The 5.1 re-master sounds tremendous and is utilized very well. In fact, I am able to force on my two rear surround speakers in conjunction with my side surround speakers and my decoder fills my room with sound. The most sure sound carry out is within the last 15 minutes of disc one, where a helicopter sounds like it is circling the room from the correct to rear to left. The viewer has the feeling of being in the center of the mask. Mountainous Sound…….

The packaging on this modern release has a cellophane wrapper indicating – All 3 movies! Lowest Imprint Ever. Bear it before time runs out! Widescreen. I checked the DVDs to try and choose if indeed these were updated versions. The second DVD does have the definite “V2″ (for version 2) on the face approach the bottom, after all rights reserved. The third DVD does not have “V2″ on the bottom, as I was hoping. Thereafter, I placed the DVDs in my computer to check the contents date. Disc 1 (that never had any problems) had dates from 2002. Discs 2 and 3 had reveal dates from 2003. Objective to be determined, I keep the movie to the test and compared the illustrious scrape scenes on the BTTF framing web status, and found disc three to be proper. So, I am gay and maintain that I have updated versions of the widescreen DVDs.

Disney’s THE PARENT TRAP remains one of the studio’s most fondly-remembered hits. With Hayley Mills, Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith leading the perfectly-realised cast, the movie has become a favourite of generations.

In THE PARENT TRAP, Sharon and Susan contemplate while at summer camp that the reason why they watch so similar is that they were twins, separated shortly after their parents’ split! The girls settle to reunite their feuding parents by switching places and forcing them to meet once the switch is discovered. However, the twins don’t count on “pluck-faced child-bride” Vicky (Joanna Barnes), who is mercurial winning the heart of Mitch (Brian Keith)! A brief but quite eventful camping perambulate should solve the spot…!

In 1985, the Disney Channel made THE PARENT TRAP II, which brought Hayley Mills encourage to Disney for the first time since 1965, to reprise her roles of mischevious twins Sharon and Susan.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Parent Trap (1961) and The Parent Trap II (1986): 2-Movie Collection! Click Here

In the exquisite first sequel, Sharon’s pubescent daughter Nikki Ferris (Carrie Kei Heim) conspires to obtain her recently-divorced mother together with the father of her best friend Mary Grant (Bridgette Andersen) . However, to acheive their goal, the girls must call in Sharon’s twin Susan, who’ll do most of the groundwork in getting the attention of Mary’s father (Tom Skerritt) . You’ll treasure this cute update in the continuing account of the twins’ lives!

DISNEY TRIVIA: Nikki Ferris and Mary Grant are also the names of the characters played by Hayley Mills in THE MOON-SPINNERS and IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS…!

Disney has released PARENT TRAP II in a double-disc location with the previously-available Vault Disney edition of the modern movie. Immense vaulue!

Later followed by PARENT TRAP III, and PARENT TRAP: HAWAIIAN HONEYMOON (both are as yet unavailable on DVD) .

I am a Disney phile. I like classic Disney fare.

The Parent Trap was a gargantuan follow up after Pollyanna for child star Hayley Mills. This 1961 classic old split veil better than ever. The supporting cast of Brian Keith (five years before he become Uncle Bill on Family Affair- when does that approach DVD? ), Maureen O’Hara And Leo G. Carroll (Four years before he became a section of U.N.C.L.E-as in the man from!) works so well with the twin Mills’s Sharon and Susan.

Most of the extra features from the Vault Disney version is here… except for the audio comments from Ms Mills and Direction David Swift. Unless you need the comments, the DVD is resplendent without it.

Twenty years later, Disney did a sequel, Parent Trap II. This improbable comedy of errors happened so DISNEY-ish and works so well on many levels. Nikki and her friend Mary try to bring Mary’s father together with Sharon. Enter Nikki’s married aunt Susan to abet Nikki and mary with their pickle and the fun begins. The split conceal attain is gracious, but not as friendly in the orginal trap. It Peaceful is pure Disney magic captured in a DVD

There are no extras regarding Parent Trap II… I know somewhere in the vault there is a ‘making of PT2′ feature, which is NOT on here. For Shame!

For children of all ages and fans of family entertainment, this DVD collection is stout fun and rates high in my book

I purchased this video location not really quick-witted the details of what it contained, but having travelled extensively through Germany by bicycle in the 1980s I was hoping to rekindle some memories. I was not disappointed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Visions of Germany! Click Here

This DVD location takes the viewer on a helicopter tour along the Rhine north from the Swiss border to around Cologne, then generally along the Danube, again from the Bodensee (Lake Constance) until it flows into Austria. Since these areas were the focus of my first German cycling skedaddle I was familiar with many of the sights along the diagram.

The scenery is pleasing and the camerawork is gigantic. Shot and mastered in high-definition, then transferred in standard format, the video plays on a standard DVD player but retains very valid image quality for those of us who possess up-converting DVD players. I acquire a 61″ TV and although the image is not as pleasant as a high definition broadcast it is by no means awful, and on a smaller TV the disagreement in image quality will be negligible.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Visions of Germany! Click Here

There are unprejudiced a few minor criticisms: firstly, the DVDs don’t hide some shapely parts of Germany – conspicuously absent are the exquisite towns of Regensburg and Nurnberg, which I would have notion would have made it into the Danube present. Also, Bremen, Kassel and parts of North Germany are not covered. Perhaps these towns will form it into an upcoming station (the aged East Germany, including Berlin, is – obviously – also not covered) . Secondly, the narrator’s convey is a puny off-putting, being annoyingly melodious and almost soporific. But maybe this is fair my hold preference. Finally, a very minor annoyance is that the Rhine video’s subtitles are often misspelled and occasionally German and English spellings are mixed in the same caption – anyway, that’s hardly worth mentioning.

Highlights of the programs were Burg Eltz (a few kilometers from the Rhine along the Mosel) and Neuschwanstein – I’m a sucker for fairytale castles.

All-in-all the video is reliable. The sound is vast, with classical and folk music being mixed together almost seamlessly. Occasionally I wanted to glance some shots inside the towns from the ground, but I mediate that including that level of detail would have forced the producers to get the video region at least twice its length – not that I would complain, but it might be beyond the scope of what the producers were aiming for.

I can’t wait to gape another area of DVDs in this series – I hope many more are forthcoming. Having lived in Austria for a few years I’m hoping the producers of this reveal might be working on an Austrian DVD. I’d also like to spy Italy given the same treatment (currently there’s only a 1.33:1 version available) and perhaps France and Spain.

Much like most of you out there I first became acquainted with the `Vision Series’ of aerial travelogue features on PBS television. Whenever I came upon one while channel surfing I’d immediately place the remote down and sit aid and relax. It wasn’t long before I decided these programs were something I’d never tire of watching and needed to be added to my private DVD collection.

Containing two program on two DVD discs, `Visions of Germany’ is the fifth high altitude tour in the series following `Visions of … Greece / Italy / England and France’. As with the previous four this ‘07 release whisks the audience away far above the maddening crowd to opinion Germany in all its astounding architectural and agricultural glory. Add to the visuals an robust German soundtrack and informative narration and your ready for departure!
watch it’s complicated free
watch it’s complicated download

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Weep! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The Novel Series, and it’s a fine product! It’s also at a obliging label, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are definite to bask in.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the unusual He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so dreadful. Super, novel artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly elegant and current look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Modern Episodes: 5 out of 5.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers: The Complete First Season! Click Here

These are the episodes the procedure I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the current sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be happy to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its unique greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to honest over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant gaze will notice compression artifacts note up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and entertaining scenes exhibit up with about as grand clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves well-known spot on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features approach up a bit short in my concept. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the new say actors, whose involvement strikes me as significant for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) execute up the reminder of this light special features fraction. Hopefully Wail! Factory will continue to release the unique series on DVD, in which case there are immense opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a big product at a huge note, and bears the closest resemblance to the fresh broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer’s long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been conception possible. Now to tie in with this summer’s live action sequel, Transformer’s 2: Revenge Of The Fallen, comes this 3-Disc DVD space containing all sixteen episodes of the first season of this beloved eighties classic. Those sixteen episodes, originally airing September 17th to December 29th 1984, are:

1: More Than Meets the See (1)

2: More Than Meets the View (2)

3: More Than Meets the Study (3)

4: Transport to Oblivion

5: Roll for It

6: Divide and Conquer

7: S.O.S. Dinobots

8: The Ultimate Doom: Brainwash (1)

9: The Ultimate Doom: Search (2)

10: The Ultimate Doom: Revival (3)

11: War of the Dinobots

12: Countdown to Extinction

13: Fire in the Sky

14: Heavy Metal War

15: Fire on the Mountain

16: A Plague of Insecticons

Special Features Are So Far Said To Include:

Original Understanding Artwork

Archival Hasbro Toy Commercials

Rare Public Service Announcements

“Triplechanger: From Toy To Comical To Screen: The Origins Of The Transformers” Featurette

A Printable Script For The Episode “Transport To Oblivion”

& A Miniature Edition Autobot Magnet

The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are serene classics to those who remember them and will be more delectable for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really unbiased a half hour commercial became well-liked knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe fair because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very indignant to hold these episodes in a unique more affordable spot. The state is being attach out by Scream! Factory and they have always done an apt job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This spot was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very contented to contemplate the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t choose the more expensive recent sets are going to be angry at the chance to gather this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this dwelling 5 stars impartial for the opportunity to have these classic episodes in a obedient DVD area, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to fresh broadcast versions with a modern stereo soundtrack created from the modern audio I’m more aroused than ever.

Some may say that this series was unprejudiced the next step in a mountainous advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the search for. Thanks For Your Time.

*Rather than clutter up the review page I have posted a list of episode descriptions in my comments piece for those who are appealing.

*It now appears that Weep! will also be releasing Transformer’s G1 in a complete series space this summer. While I mediate this first season station is mild tall for some I personally am more furious for the complete series.
watch paranormal activity online
watch the invention of lying movie

This was originally released in 1966 at 112 mins in Spacevision 3-D, which made spend of the polarized system and certain grey glasses. In 1976, a shorter version running 91 mins was released widely under the title “Astonishing Invasion of Planet Earth.” The current polarized version had wonderful 3-D, but this is a “downconverted” anaglyph version which uses the red and vlue type of glasses. The execute is not nearly as first-rate, but it does work significantly better than Rhino’s “Comin at Ya” DVD. The film is kind of dead and it has been compared to an overlong episode of “The Twilight Zone” which is an lawful description. It does manage to own some interest for sci-fi fans, however. If you want to look a 3-D film on DVD, this one works better than I expected because it has less gimmick shots which do not work well in red/blue anaglyph format. The best example of this type of 3-D on video is definately the VHS or laser release of “the Hide” (1961) or even the DVD of “Freddy’s Dull” which is included in the ELm st box position. However, should you wish to glimpse a really beneficial, rotund color version with bulky 3-D effects, and are willing to invest in some semi-expensive electric shutter glasses, go to 3dmagic.com to fetch out how! Many 3-D movies are available, including a perfect version of “Comin at Ya’!

This isn’t exactly a review… first of all, the disc is not full-frame, it’s widescreen. In fact, it calculates to about 2.50:1 which is wider than your basic Panavision film! Second, the running time is unbiased over 90 minutes, not 112. Third, my copy is in a snapper case, not a keepcase.

Okay, I’ll do a few comments. The 3D attain is not very estimable – I’ve always had anguish with these red/blue 3D presentations – but it’s a lot better when viewed on a computer monitor than on a television for some reason. The movie is consuming but there’s not remarkable payoff – they’re trapped in this bubble, we know there’s something controlling the people inside, but it’s all residence and not enough conclusion. Probably due to its era, it reminded me a lot of an episode of LAND OF THE GIANTS. Regardless of my level-headed negativity, since I really be pleased this genre, I liked the movie enough to give it 3 out of 5.
watch it’s complicated free
download it’s complicated online

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), aged Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me sob.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I concept it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a shocked young boy star-struck by a renowned explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become swiftly friends, and order to one day recede to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they rob their dream home and fix it up, hoping to believe it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through obsolete age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a gay marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s hurt when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers finish in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and depart to Paradise Falls. A conventional balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of luminous balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a beefy, bold kid trying to salvage a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the obsolete man and the microscopic boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a gargantuan rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of finish calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his gloomy mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by elegant hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole novel world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, corpulent of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Regain another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to perform an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster gripping movie. But in the meantime, they’re smooth putting out exquisite entertaining movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety stale man. It’s a charming, fun small adventure chronicle with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet runt legend about loss and admire.

As a child, the worried Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared like of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, recede into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a proper estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an alive to, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the lunge. Terrible kid was unprejudiced trying to regain an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle waddle to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a stout emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious obsolete man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the dilapidated guy is very familiar to Carl — and to bewitch Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as celebrated as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty extinct coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can devour Carl’s fancy for his lost wife, and his uninteresting realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they display all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing primitive together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy reach to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of immense dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Glimpse Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frigid! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an old airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and certain to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is clear to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special study. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I like you”) and act the device dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to gather shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of queer stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable sharp shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to stutter potentially disagreeable baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously curious, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can like. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!
watch planet 51
watch planet 51 online

One of the gigantic pleasures of Quentin Tarantino movies is the wonderfully inventive casting that he employs. In PULP FICTION, he revived the career of John Travolta, made Samuel Jackson a star, pushed Bruce Willis into another echelon and even helped pick up Ving Rhames off to a profitable commence. In JACKIE BROWN, he burnished Pam Grier & Robert Forster’s careers. In Destroy BILL, he reinvented Uma Thurman and reinvigorated David Carradine. Even in DEATH PROOF, he introduced the world to the astonishing stuntwoman Zoe Bell and gave Kurt Russell the kind of share he’s missed out on for too long.

And now, wonderfully, in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, he’s introduced the American viewer to some stellar European actors, namely Melanie Laurent and particularly Christoph Waltz, now an easy celebrated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Tarantino also frequently tries the patience of his viewers with his rococo dialogue and insistence on constantly reminding us that we’re watching a movie. In PULP FICTION, all his “habits” were current and recent to most viewers (because, really, how many of us had seen RESERVOIR DOGS before we saw FICTION? ), but over time, we learned that Tarantino was often honest a dinky too glad with his have screenwriting and often too gratified with his hold directing. In a completely off-the-wall portion like the priceless Slay BILL films, everything worked to originate a crazy-quilt whole. In INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, he’s too clever for his absorb safe at times.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Inglourious Basterds! Click Here

BASTERDS tells the completely counterfeit anecdote of how World War II might have ended had a group of bloodthirsty, highly trained American Jews been allowed to infiltrate Nazi occupied France with no mission other than to assume Nazi scalps. Oh, and how that mission needed to collide with one fateful night when all the top leadership of Germany attended the gala opening of a modern propaganda film held at a movie theatre owned by a sparkling French girl who was actually a Jew who had escaped a massacre that had taken her entire family and now she’s zigzag on revenge at any cost. And of how her goal coincides with that of an undercover British agent who objective happens to be a German film scholar and a German double agent who happens to be a movie star.

I know that sounds a diminutive confusing. To Tarantino’s credit, the status as laid out in this 150 runt film is actually easy to follow. In fact, he’s build everything into easy-to-digest chapters. It does ask us to enjoy that every principal member of the German government & military would all assemble in a fairly public site at one time…but if you can rep past that hurdle, there is powerful vicarious pleasure to be had in watching WWII reinvented by Tarantino.

By far, the best fraction of the film is Chapter 1. It features Waltz as SS officer Col. Hans Landa in what is easily the most chilling portrayal of a Nazi since Ralph Fiennes donned the uniform in SCHINDLER’S LIST. Fiennes role (and that entire gleaming movie) were for altogether different purposes. Landa comes off more like a Nazi Hannibal Lecter (without the unique dining preferences) …he’s a bit of a lone wolf in his acquire party. He’s feared by all, because he has a astounding BS detector that helps him root out deception at every turn. In the opening scene, which plays out like a elegant one-act play, Landa comes to a humble French farmhouse and speaks with the owner. We know the owner is hiding Jews beneath his floorboard, and we’re stunning positive Landa knows it too. Fair how he gets that information, through one of the most tense interrogation scenes you’ll ever glance, is a joy to sight. You literally salvage yourself not breathing. I leaned forward in my seat. And yet there is never a raised boom, nor a threatening gesture. The screws are applied through intensity of manner. Waltz instantly makes his character a classic. Tarantino the writer has crafted incandescent dialogue, and Tarantino the director films it all with rare taste and simplicity, and Waltz knocks it out of the park.

The rest of the film is more uneven. While Brad Pitt is a goofy delight as Aldo Raine, leader of the Basterds…it’s a performance that is more campy than believable. His Basterds, including folks like director Eli Roth and B.J. Novak from TV’s “The Office” are fairly interchangeable. And strangely, we peruse forward to them conducting Ruin BILL PT. ONE type mayhem, yet they actually exercise relatively exiguous screentime showing them in action. There is one short, effective scene of their possess mark of interrogation…but mostly we have to recall the word of other characters (like Hitler himself) that these guys are wreaking havoc on the Nazis.

And during one jarring moment, we are introduced to one of the basterds with a blast of `70s era Blaxploitation music and a `70s era title card. Why? Yes, it was humorous…but it took everyone totally out of the spell the movie was weaving. Unprejudiced as having Michael Myers, in thick but unconvincing makeup, play a British officer hatching a way to blow up a movie theater, was very distracting. Myers accent is impeccable, and he plays the section straight…but he’s calm unmistakably Myers and many audience members snickered when they recognized him. Very distracting.

It’s as though Tarantino doesn’t quite gain that he can perform a straightforward film and have it be riveting. Too unpleasant…because when he gets out of his have scheme (as he mostly does in the climactic sequences of the film), INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a cinematic treat. The splendid settings and glorious costumes even gave Tarantino a chance to indicate off and have it fit the tone of the film…but he unruffled insists on going off the rails. “Hey, this is a Tarantino movie!” he seems to want to roar at us. And this causes him to fetch in the plot of the resplendent Melanie Laurant, who plays the vengeful theater owner. I’ve never seen her before, and she is an entrancing presence, whether in casual slacks or a handsome formal red dress. She dominates the final portions of the film.

I had a spacious time at this film, and I recommend it fairly highly. But with 10 minutes less of the sometimes too clever dialogue and 5 minutes less of Tarantino’s showboating, and we might have had a factual classic of suspense. Watch it, though, because the two performances I mentioned are worth the trace of admission…heck, the opening scene is worth it.

A team of American guerillas terrorizing Nazis gradual enemy lines, a Jewish woman (Melanie Laurent) running a movie theater in occupied France, and a feared SS officer (Christoph Waltz) unpleasant paths with explosive consequences.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s WWII adventure is bewitching, but overrated. The running time of nearly three hours flew by, and I was riveted by the stories of the woman and the Nazi; however, the Basterds themselves did not absorb my interest for a moment. Brad Pitt, as their leader, really stands out for his terrible performance when contrasted with the many improbable but lesser known actors in this film, such as Diane Kruger playing a German movie star who is also a double agent. Tarantino’s gimmicks are not as numerous as they are in some of his other projects, but they are jarring when they occur. Many eye them as exuberant nods to B-movie history, but they strike me as indulgences that rarely aid the sage. Nevertheless, the rest of the film is so kindly that I have no effort recommending it.

And the design he ends WWII is a lot more satisfying than the map it really ended.
